Lucia loves Edgardo, leader of her family's enemies, but her brother Enrico, needing a political alliance, forces her to marry Arturo. Deceived by a forged letter, Lucia believes Edgardo has betrayed her. Heartbroken, she submits to the wedding—only for Edgardo to arrive and denounce her. Later, driven mad, Lucia kills Arturo and dies. Learning the truth too late, Edgardo takes his own life, choosing death to reunite with Lucia in heaven.
